3. Boot Options

Use this option to change the user interface the Raspberry Pi presents when it boots:

Boot Option Description
Console Provides a text Console, and requires a user to login before they can access the system.
Console (Autologin) Provides a text Console, and the system is automatically logged in to as the ‘pi’ user.
Desktop Provides a Desktop Graphical User Interface (GUI), and requires a user to login before they can access the system.
Desktop (Autologin) Provides a Desktop Graphical User Interface (GUI), and the system is automatically logged in to as the ‘pi’ user.

The default boot option for Raspbian Jessie is Desktop (Autologin).

The default boot option for Raspbian Jessie Lite is Console.

  1. Start at the raspi-config main menu.

  2. Select Boot Options. The Choose boot option page is displayed.

  3. Select the desired boot option, and press Enter.

The Raspbian Jessie Lite distribution does not include a pre-installed desktop graphical user interface (GUI). If you want to use the desktop boot options with Raspbian Jessie Lite, you will first need to install the lightdm package.

  1. To install lightdm, use the following package install command:
    sudo apt-get install lightdm -y

  1. I’m in the process of installing UniFi on a RasPi but will go to bed now (after 1AM) and finish tomorrow. Later I want to install it on an OrangePiPC if I can.
