Installation

The instructions provided in this section are for uncustomised installations of Windows Server 2012 R2. They cover both Server Core and classic Server with Graphical User Interface (GUI) installation types.

Local Media Installation

The steps in this section are for installation from local media, such as DVD optical disc or USB storage device.

For instructions on how to use a USB storage device to install Windows, see my Creating a bootable USB Windows Installation device article.

  1. Insert the Windows Server 2012 R2 installation media into your computer, and start the computer so that it boots from the installation media. If you are using optical installation media, the following prompt stating Press any key to boot from CD or DVD will be displayed.

  2. Press any key to boot from the optical installation media. The system will start Loading Files.

    The Locale window will be displayed.

  3. Select your preferred Language, Time and currency format and Keyboard or input method, and click Next. The Install now window will be displayed.

  4. Click Install Now. The Setup is starting screen will be displayed.

  5. The next several windows in regards to licensing will depend on the installation media you are using.
    Evaluation
    If you are using the 180-day Evaluation installation media, the following windows will be displayed.

    1. The Select the operating system you want to install window will be displayed.

      The available operating system choices are:

      • Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Evaluation (Server Core Installation)
      • Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Evaluation (Server with a GUI)
      • Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Evaluation (Server Core Installation)
      • Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Evaluation (Server with a GUI)
    2. Select the operating system edition you wish to install and click Next. The License terms window will be displayed.

    3. Tick I accept the license terms, and click Next.

    Volume License
    If you are using the Volume License installation media, the following windows will be displayed.

    1. The Select the operating system you want to install window will be displayed.

      The available operating system choices are:

      • Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (Server Core Installation)
      • Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (Server with a GUI)
      • Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter (Server Core Installation)
      • Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter (Server with a GUI)
    2. Select the operating system edition you wish to install and click Next. The License terms window will be displayed:

    3. Tick I accept the license terms, and click Next.

    Retail
    If you are using the Retail installation media, the following windows will be displayed.

    1. When using Retail installation media, selection of an operating system edition is restricted based on your product key. The following Enter the product key to activate Windows window will be displayed.

    2. Enter your product key and click Next. The Select the operating system you want to install window will be displayed.

      The available operating system choices will be determined by your product key.

    3. Select the operating system edition you wish to install and click Next. The License terms window will be displayed.

    4. Tick I accept the license terms, and click Next.

  6. The Which type of installation do you want? window will be displayed.

  7. Click Custom: Install Windows only (advanced). The Where do you want to install Windows? window be displayed.

    Windows is generally installed on Drive 0. If your first drive already contains one or more partitions, use the Delete button to remove them so that the entire drive appears as Unallocated Space.

    These instructions do not cover loading additional mass storage drivers, or support vendor utility partitions.
  8. Select Drive 0 Unallocated Space and click Next. The remainder of the installation process is automated. The Installing Windows: Copying files progress window will be displayed momentarily.

  9. Click Restart now or wait 10 seconds. The computer restarts and resumes the automated Windows setup process. The Getting devices ready screen will be displayed.

  10. The final couple of setup screens will depend on the installation type you chose earlier.
    Server Core
    If you chose a Server Core installation, the following screens will be displayed.

    1. The The user's password must be changed before first signing in screen will be displayed.

    2. Click Ok. The Change password screen will be displayed.

    3. Type and confirm your built-in Administrator password, and press Enter. The Your password has been changed screen will be displayed.

    4. Click Ok. The Administrator will be signed in and a Command Prompt window will be displayed.

    Server with GUI
    If you chose a Server with Graphical User Interface installation, the following screens will be displayed.

    1. The Settings: Built-in Administrator Password screen will be displayed.

    2. Type and reenter your built-in Administrator password, and click Finish. The Finalizing your settings screen will be displayed momentarily.

    3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. The Administrator sign in screen will be displayed.

    4. Type the Administrator's password and press Enter. The Administrator is signed in, the Windows desktop loads, and the Server Manager application opens:

  11. Windows Server 2012 R2 is now installed and ready for post-installation configuration.
Windows Deployment Services

The steps in this section are for installation over the network using Windows Deployment Services.

  1. Start the computer so that it boots from the network. A Windows Boot Manager prompt similar to the following may be displayed.

  2. Select the entry for Windows Server 2012 R2 and press Enter. The system will start Loading Files.

  3. Select your preferred Locale and Keyboard or input method, and click Next. A Windows credentials prompt will be displayed.

  4. Type the appropriate credentials to connect to Windows Deployment Services and click OK. The available operating system choices displayed in the following window will be determined by your network administrator, and depends on which source media they have loaded into Windows Deployment Services.
    Evaluation
    If your network administrator has provided the 180-day Evaluation installation source, the following window will be displayed.

    1. The Select the operating system you want to install window will be displayed.

      • Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Evaluation (Server Core Installation)

    2. Select the operating system edition you wish to install and click Next.

    2. Select the operating system edition you wish to install and click Next.

    If you chose a Server with Graphical User Interface installation, the following screens will be displayed.

    1. The the Locale Settings screen will be displayed.

    2. Select your preferred Country or region, App language and Keyboard layout, and click Next. The next several screens in regards to licensing will depend on the installation source you have used.

    4. Type and reenter your built-in Administrator password, and click Finish. The Finalizing your settings screen will be displayed momentarily.

    6. Type the Administrator's password and press Enter. The Administrator is signed in, the Windows desktop loads, and the Server Manager application opens:
