Configuration

The following instructions are for the initial configuration of Windows Server 2012 R2. They cover both Server Core and classic Graphic User Interface (GUI) installation types.

These instructions should be performed immediately after installation.
Server Core

The instructions in this section are primarily intended for Server Core installations, however, they can also be used for Server with GUI installations.

Administrator sign in

If you signed out, or restarted your server at one of the following configuration steps, you will need to sign in again.

At the sign in screen, type your Administrator password and press Enter. The Administrator will be signed in and a Command Prompt window will be displayed.

From the Command Prompt, run the following command.

sconfig

The Server Configuration tool will be displayed.

The following sub-sections describe how to configure the most important options.

Domain/Workgroup

This sub-section will add your server to an existing Active Directory services Domain. If this is to be your first server in a new Active Directory environment, then you can skip this sub-section.

  1. Select option 1 to Change Domain/ Workstation Membership. A prompt to Join (D)omain or (W)orkgroup? will be displayed.

  2. Type D and press Enter to join your server to a Domain. Type the following domain information when prompted:
    The name of the domain to join <domain-name>
    An authorized domain\user <domain-name>\<user-name>
    Password associated with the domain\user <password>

    The server will attempt to join the specified domain. A message asking Do you want to change the computer name before restarting the computer? will be displayed.

  3. Click Yes. Refer to the following Computer Name sub-section for instructions on how to rename your server.

This sub-section allows you to rename the server to suite your environment.

  1. Select option 2 to change the Computer Name. A prompt to Enter a new computer name will be displayed.

  2. Type a new Computer Name for this server, and press Enter. A message stating You must restart your computer to apply these changes. Restart now? will be displayed.

  3. Click Yes. The server will shutdown and restart.

Windows Update Settings

This sub-section is optional and depends on how you intend to manage Windows Updates for servers in your environment.

  1. Select option 5 to change Windows Update Settings. A prompt asking Select (A)utomatic or (M)anual updates will be display.

  2. Type A and press Enter to set updates to Automatic. A message stating Windows Update set to Automatic. System will check for and install updates every day at 3:00 AM. will be displayed.

  3. Click OK.

Download and Install Updates

This step is highly recommended to ensure your server is fully patched and up to date.

  1. Select option 6 to Download and Install Updates. A command script window will be displayed with the following prompt.
    Search for (A)ll updates or (R)ecommended updates only?
  2. Type A and press Enter to search for All updates. The script will display output similar to the following.

    ...list of available updates...
    
    Select an option:
    (A)ll updates, (N)o updates or (S)elect a single update?
  3. Type A and press Enter to install All updates. The script will display output similar to the following.

    When all updates have been downloaded, the script will display output similar to the following.

  4. Click Yes. The server will shutdown and restart.

Network Settings

This sub-section allows you to configure static Network Settings for your server.

  1. Select option 8 and press Enter to change Network Settings. The Network settings section with a list of Available Network Adapters will be displayed.

  2. Type the Network Adapter Index for the selected adapter and press Enter. The selected Network Adapter Settings will be displayed.

  3. Select option 1 and press Enter to Set Network Adapter Address. Type the following network address information when prompted:
    Addressing Static
    IP Address <ip-address>
    Subnet Mask <subnet-mask>
    Default Gateway <default-gateway>

    The updated Network Adapter Settings will be displayed.

  4. Select option 2 and press Enter to Set DNS Servers. A prompt to Enter new preferred DNS server will be displayed.

  5. Type the address of the new preferred DNS server and press Enter. A message box stating Preferred DNS server set will be displayed.

  6. Click OK. Type the address of the alternate DNS server, or leave blank for none, and press Enter. The updated Network Adapter Settings will be displayed.

  7. Select option 4 and press Enter to return to the Main Menu.

Date and Time

This sub-section is optional and allows you to adjust the Date and Time on your server, if required.

  1. Select option 9 to change the Date and Time. The Date and Time properties window will be displayed.

  2. Adjust the date and time as required, and click OK.

Windows Activation

This sub-section allows you to check the Windows Activation state of your server.

  1. Select option 11 and press Enter to check Windows Activation. The Windows Activation sub-menu will be displayed.

  2. Select option 3 and press Enter to Install Product key. The Enter Product Key window will be displayed.

  3. Type your 25-Digit Product Key, including dashes, and click OK. A command prompt window with the following message will be displayed.

  4. Type exit and press Enter to close the command prompt window.
  5. Select option 2 and press Enter to Activate Windows. A command prompt window with the following message will be displayed.

  6. Type exit and press Enter to close the command prompt window.
  7. Select option 4 and press Enter to return to the main menu.

Server with GUI

The instructions in this sub-section can be used with Server with Graphical User Interface installations only.

Administrator sign in

If you signed out, or restarted your server at one of the following configuration steps, you will need to sign in again.

  1. The Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to sign in screen will be displayed.

  2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. The Administrator sign in screen will be displayed.

  3. Type the Administrator's password and press Enter. The Administrator is signed in, the Windows desktop loads, and the Server Manager application opens:

The following sub-sections describe how to configure the most important options on the local server.

Computer Name

This sub-section shows describes how to rename the server to suite your environment.

  1. From the Local Server Properties screen, click the current Computer name link. The System Properties window will be displayed.

  2. From the Computer Name tab, click Change... The Computer Name/Domain Changes properties window will be displayed.

  3. In the Computer name field, type the new Computer Name for this server, and click OK. A message stating that You must restart your computer to apply the changes will be displayed.

  4. Click OK. Focus will return to the System Properties window.

  5. Click Close. A system prompt stating You must restart your computer to apply these changes will be displayed.

  6. Click Restart Now. The server will shutdown and restart.

Windows Update

This sub-section is optional and depends on how you intend to manage Windows Updates for servers in your environment.

  1. From the Local Server Properties screen, click the Windows Update link; Not configured by default. The Windows Update window will be displayed.

  2. Click Turn on automatic updates. Windows Update will begin checking for updates.

    When Windows Update has finished checking for updates, a summary of important and optional available updates will be displayed.

  3. Click the important updates are available link. The Select the updates you wish to install window will be displayed.

  4. Ensure all the Important and Optional updates are selected and click Install. Windows Update will begin downloading updates.

    When Windows Update has finished downloading updates, it will begin installing updates.

    When Windows Update has finished installing updates, a prompt stating Restart your PC to finish installing updates will be displayed.

  5. Click Restart now. The server will shutdown and restart.

Network Settings

This sub-section allows you to configure static Network Settings for your server.

  1. From the Local Server Properties screen, click the Ethernet link. The Network Connections window will be displayed.

  2. Right-click on the Ethernet network adapter to display a context menu.

  3. Select Properties. The Ethernet Properties window will be displayed.

  4. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties. The Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window will be displayed.

  5. Click Use the following IP address. Type the following network address information into the corresponding fields:
    IP address <ip-address>
    Subnet mask <subnet-mask>
    Default gateway <default-gateway>
  6. Click Use the following DNS server addresses. Type the following DNS information into the corresponding fields:
    Preferred DNS server <preferred-dns-server>
    Alternate DNS server <alternate-dns-server>
  7. Click OK to close the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window.
  8. Click Close to close the Ethernet Properties window.
  9. Close the Network Connections window.

Date and Time

This sub-section is optional and allows you to adjust the Date and Time on your server, if required.

  1. From the Local Server Properties screen, click the Time zone link. The Date and Time properties window will be displayed.

Windows Activation

This sub-section allows you to check the Windows Activation state of your server.

  1. From the Local Server Properties screen, click the Product ID link. The Enter a product key screen will be displayed.

  2. Type your 25-Digit Product Key. Activation will occur automatically, and when complete the Thanks, you're all done will be displayed.
