DNS

UniFi devices attempt to resolve the unifi host name using DNS in order to obtain the IP address of the UniFi Controller.

Adding a unifi Host (A) record to your DNS server will allow UniFi devices to resolve the IP address of the UniFi Controller, therefore being able to contact the inform URL and perform the adoption process.

For UniFi devices with a statically assigned IP address, ensure that the DNS server entry has also been configured.
Windows

If using Microsoft Windows Server-based DNS, you can create a new Host (A) record in your DNS zone.

  1. Launch DNS Manager in Windows. The DNS Manager window will be displayed.
    Windows Server: DNS Manager

    Windows: DNS Manager

  2. Right-click on the forward lookup zone for your DNS domain. A context menu will be displayed.
Windows Server: DNS Manager: New Host (A or AAAA)

Windows: New Host (A or AAAA)

  3. From the context menu, select New Host (A or AAAA). The New Host window will be displayed.
Windows Server: DNS Manager: New Host

    Windows: New Host

  4. In the Name field, type unifi and in the IP address field, type the IP address of your UniFi Controller. Tick or untick the Create associated pointer (PTR) record depending on whether you have configured a reverse lookup zone for the specified IP address range (untick if you do not know what this means).
  5. Click Add Host. A message stating The host record was successfully created will be displayed.
Windows Server: The host record was successfully created

Windows: The host record was successfully created

  6. Click OK. The New Host window will be re-displayed.
Windows Server: DNS Manager: New Host - Done

    Windows: New Host (Done)

  7. Click Done. The New Host window will close. A new unifi Host (A) record will be listed in the forward lookup zone for your DNS domain.
