System

Filesystem

If you installed Raspbian using the NOOBS installer, then you can ignore this item as the file system was expanded automatically during installation. However, if you imaged Raspbian directly to an SD card yourself, then part of the card will be unused; this can be any amount over 3GB.

Choosing this item will expand your installation to fill the rest of the SD card. You will need to reboot the Raspberry Pi to make this space available. Note there is no confirmation – selecting the option begins the partition expansion immediately.

  1. Start on the Raspberry Pi Configuration System tab.
    Raspberry Pi Configuration: System

    Raspberry Pi Configuration: System

  2. Click Expand Filesystem. A message stating that The filesystem has been expanded. The new space will not be available until you reboot your Raspberry Pi. will be displayed.

    The filesystem has been expanded.

  3. Click OK. The message will close.

When you reboot your Raspberry Pi, the file system will be automatically resized, which can take some time – depending on the size of your SD card.
