The MMmm Pi PoE Board for Raspberry Pi is an excellent HAT for the Raspberry Pi, providing full PoE 802.3af compliance and a large prototyping area. Powering the Raspberry Pi using PoE really simplifies setup and remote deployment. I highly recommend it!
Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) is something that I am really surprised wasn’t integrated in the design of the Raspberry Pi through a simple add-on regulator module – similar to what has been done by some Arduino board makers.
The Ethernet pass-through cable and plug can take up space in a box, and I have been thinking of ways to possibly replace the RJ45 Ethernet socket on the Raspberry Pi with a header that could plug directly into the Pi PoE board. Possibly!?
With the Raspberry Pi Zero released last week, and lacking any Ethernet connectivity of its own, I wonder how hard it would be build a complete PoE solution by adding a SMSC LAN9514 to the MMmm Pi PoE Prototype Board?
