Remote Server Administration Tools and Windows Deployment Services

Remote Server Administration Tools and Windows Deployment Services

The Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) allows system administrators to manage Windows Servers remotely from their Windows workstations. The latest Remote Server Administration Tools can be downloaded from Microsoft using the one of following links:

Windows Vista
Windows 7
Windows 8
Windows 8.1
Windows 10

Elevated Shortcut

To create an elevated shortcut to the Remote Server Administration Tools, create a new Windows shortcut with the following command text:

%windir%\system32\runas.exe /user:administrator@domain.local "%windir%\system32\ServerManager.exe"

Replace administrator@domain.local with your administrative username.

Windows Deployment Services

Unfortunately, the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) are missing a key snap-in from the toolkit; the Windows Deployment Services (WDS) console.

Luckily it is possible to manually “install” the Windows Deployment Services console on a Windows workstation by copying the required source files from a Windows Server. While this approach works, do remember that it is not supported by Microsoft!

To install the Windows Deployment Services console on your Windows workstation, perform the following steps:

  1. Copy the following files from a Windows Server with the Windows Deployment Services role installed, and paste them into the same location on the target Windows workstation.
    %systemroot%\system32\WdsMgmt.msc
    %systemroot%\system32\en-US\WdsMgmt.msc

    %systemroot%\system32\wdsmgmt.dll
    %systemroot%\system32\en-US\wdsmgmt.dll.mui

    %systemroot%\system32\wdsmmc.dll
    %systemroot%\system32\en-US\wdsmmc.dll.mui

    %systemroot%\system32\WdsImage.dll
    %systemroot%\system32\en-US\WdsImage.dll.mui

    %systemroot%\system32\WdsTptMgmt.dll
    %systemroot%\system32\en-US\WdsTptMgmt.dll.mui

    %systemroot%\system32\wdscsl.dll

Note: if you are using a localised version of Windows, substitute your language code for en-US.

  2. Register the following components on the target Windows workstation:
    regsvr32 WdsMgmt.dll
    regsvr32 WdsTptMgmt.dll
    regsvr32 WdsMmc.dll
  3. Create a shortcut to %windir%\system32\WdsMgmt.msc or open the snap-in in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
To create an elevated shortcut, use the following command text:

    %windir%\system32\runas /netonly /user:administrator@domain.local "mmc %windir%\System32\wdsmgmt.msc"

Replace administrator@domain.local with your administrative username.
