The Dell XPS M1730, released in 2007, was Dell’s final gaming laptop before establishing the Alienware premier gaming brand in 2009 – with the model ultimately replaced by the Alienware M17x series.

This article looks at the hardware that made the Dell XPS M1730, and what steps need to be taken to get Windows 10 up and running on the laptop today.

  1. Hi
I have an Australian M1730 with Dual 512mb NVIDIA GeForce 8800m GTX with NVI DIA SLI – could you please advise which of the Firmware you have added, should I use as appears to be only 8700 or 9800.

    1. Hi Paul,

I was never able to find updated firmware for the 8800m series – it seems Dell never made it publicly available.

However, I did come across this forum post Has anyone flashed their 8800m gtx sli with 9800m gt sli bios succesfully?, which has instructions for flash upgrading your 8800m GTX to 9800m GT without any problems (so the author maintains!) – and is specifically for the M1730.

Doing some quick Googling shows that you may need a certain model of the 8800m for it to be upgradable. Do some research before you take the leap, and let me know if you decide to give it a try!

      Kind Regards,
      Chris

  2. Chris I have Windows 10 in my M1730 and now the keyboard lights wont light up even when I press the proper buttons and have installed the Dell supplied driver. Is this a hopeless case?

    1. Hi Rei,

You should be able to get the keyboard lights working fine on the M1730 with Windows 10.

Do the keyboard lights come on when you power on the M1730 first, but then turn off once you get into Windows?

      Things to check:

      • Have you got Keyboard Illumination turned On in the BIOS? (See Page 4).
      • From the Dell QuickSet utility, go to the Gaming options from where you to adjust all the lighting options for the M1730 – including the Keyboard Illumination.

Hope that points you in the right direction – let me know how you go.

      Kind Regards,
      Chris.
