This article explains how to use the official Microsoft Windows USB/DVD Download Tool to create a bootable USB device for installing Windows on your computer.

This tool has been partially superseded by the Media Creation Tool for Windows 10. However, this tool can still be used to create a bootable USB installation device from a Windows 10 ISO file downloaded with the Media Creation Tool.

This post is a complete and comprehensive guide to installing and configuring Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2, and covers installation from local media, such as DVD or USB, and deployment over the network using Windows Deployment Services.

The instructions in this post can be used with the Evaluation, Volume License and Retail releases of the installation media, and includes separate sections on Server Core and Server with GUI installation types.

Although these instructions are written specifically for Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and Datacenter editions, they are also suitable for the Foundation, Essentials, and Hyper-V editions with just minor variations.

This article is based on the refresh release of Windows Server 2012 R2 with the November 2014 update rollup (KB3000850).
